The Importance of Sunlight

Proper exposure to sunshine is important for good health too!

Sunshine:

Air and sun Thanks to our depleting ozone, it isn't such a bright idea to spend time outside in the sun for too long, especially without sun block.

Exposing your unprotected skin to the sun's rays for a prolong time is linked to skin cancer. However, if you wear protective clothing, and slather on some SPF, there is no need to nix your relationship with Mr. Golden Sun. In fact, allowing a little sun in your life is very good for you.

Sunlight promotes the production of vitamin D. Vitamin D helps maintain serum calcium and phosphorous levels which helps toward keeping your metabolic functions and neuromuscular transmission running in tip top shape! Sure, you could go and buy some supplements, but why bother when you could just step outside for awhile?

Walking the dog Take a walk around the block for thirty minutes, and not only have you gotten a little exercise, but you have also received some fresh air for your pipes and some much needed vitamin D! It's a triple win situation! Ever feel a little blue in the winter time?  It could be because in the winter and even in the fall when the sun is not out for as long a time, our serotonin levels dip.

What does that mean? It means that we don't feel as good. Our bodies crave the sun. It makes us happy, just like when we exercise and those endorphins kick in! Sunlight boost the serotonin levels in the body, which is all the more reason to make sure you get a little sun each day. Just don't forget your SPF!!
